IT was meant to be a quick trip to Costco for deli meat for Vince Muscatello, but it turned into a bulk-buy bonanza.

Instead of leaving the Melbourne store with his intended kangaroo prosciutto, he left with 10 carpets.

And another man was so excited by the prices, he filled his cart with dog food, even though he does not have a dog and was only planning on getting one at Christmas, the Sunday Herald Sun reports.

They are not alone. Customers are spending thousands of dollars each trip to discount warehouse Costco, in what experts have labelled a bulk-buying phenomenon.

Since the US retail giant opened its first Australian store in August in Docklands, shoppers have been "going berserk" and buying goods in large quantities.
