7th Costco Shopping in 2020 – $9.83 today / $344.88 this year

My favorite colleague came to work really late today. I figured she was not having a good day. So I made a Costco run and got an Acai Bowl for her. This made her feel better.

I worked 11 hours today. So, I treated myself with a Caesar Salad. Costco’s Caesar salad is guaranteed good meal. The trick is to eat the least amount of dressing possible, or completely avoid it. Chicken seemed to contain a lot of salt. And, I don’t see anything good about croutons.

iPhone picture. Not good.

6th Costco Shopping in 2020 – $10.13 today / $335.05 this year

Today is Super Bowl Sunday, 02/02/2020. I went to Costco early morning for car wash and a slice of combination pizza to go. I’ll be watching the Super Bowl alone. I am preparing for the Super Bowl viewing party for one person. I will have this slice of pizza and some snacks when I watch the game. I know it’s little sad having a one person viewing party, but it’s OK… I’m OK…

What’s challenging was food temptation at Costco. I was craving for a hot dog. I wanted to enjoy Sunday morning hot dog while sitting outside in glorious California weather. Also, I wanted to buy two slices of pizza instead of just one. I should reward myself with two slices of pizza, the hungry John said to my ear. But, I was determined to fight the temptation. So, I put on my retainers before leaving home, that way eating would be a hassle.

I didn’t eat a hot dog. Also, I only bought one slice of pizza. I came home and made a Vitamix juice for breakfast. One of my new year’s resolution is to fit in my 30 Inch waist pants comfortably. Young folks look good no matter what shape they are in. Big women look amazing sexy no matter how old they are. But, if you see an awesome looking gentleman, chances are, he is slim – not necessarily muscular, but slim. So, I choose to stay slim.

OK, I am ready for the football. I don’t even know who’s playing. Oh, red and white. I like the red team. Yes~! the red team made the first rundown!

Member Only Savings – $18.50 today / $68 this year

My song of the day. What I’m listening now.

Costco member only savings (coupon) saved $18.50.

I picked up some extra bottles of Biotin, hoping they will grow hair. I’ve been taking extra dose of Biotin for last few months.

Woolite for all clothes (#2154729) was $12.49 after $3.50 instant saving. The price alone was the reason I decided to I give it a try. I could be wrong, but I believe all brand name laundry detergents are pretty much same besides the scent. I buy all my laundry detergents at Costco, so they are all good. I wouldn’t buy some mystery laundry detergents at 99 Cents only store. Also, I question freshness of 99 Cents only stores laundry detergents. They sell expired bolognas, for heaven sake. Remember, laundry detergents break down (lose effectiveness) after 6-12 months.

I wrote down the purchase date on Woolite jug so I will know how long they last.

PS. I just reviewed my blog before posting. OMG, my blog is so boring. Haha. But, I wish you a boring and predictable life. I hope nobody will get sick… no hospital, no court date. I wish you will enjoy your everyday coffee, walk your dog every day, sit on your old couch… and smile forever. Talk to you later.

Tuesday lunch.

Since some people don’t like paper straws, this time I paid close attention to the paper straw. I couldn’t find anything wrong with the paper straw. I have absolutely no complaint. I like these paper straws – with or without environmental benefits.

There is beauty in eating alone, especially when it comes to lunch time on work day. Sometimes last thing you want to see is your coworker’s face. It was an enjoyable and relaxing lunch. I drank water instead of soda.

2nd Costco Shopping in 2020 – $53.62 today / $267.49 this year

Costco sells Valentine’s Day flowers, mostly roses, with free delivery. A typical arrangement contains 50 roses, and it will cost you about $54 after tax. I believe this is an excellent price. Visit Costco for all Valentine’s Day floral arrangements. Below is a few key points.

  • Due to the large volume of Valentine’s Day floral orders, your order will deliver on or one day before your preferred arrival date.
  • For Valentine’s Day flower delivery, you must order before February 11, 11 AM PST. I am guessing that February 14 delivery option may max out soon. I recommend that you order as soon as possible if you want Valentine’s Day delivery.
  • You will Choose your arrival date when you check out.
  • Shipping is free. Tax will be added.

Dozen Roses for $15.99 at Costco (in the past)

On Valentine’s Day, Costco sells a dozen roses for $15.99. I am saying this from my past experience. I cannot promise you if there will be roses on Valentine’s Day at Costco this year. But, personally, I rely on Costco every year for the roses, and they always had plenty of roses for last minute shoppers like me.

If $15.99 is too much. Just buy one stem rose from anywhere (local supermarket). I bought one stem rose in 2011. That one stem rose was more meaningful and beautiful than the 50 stem roses I just ordered. I don’t remember to whom I gave this rose to (#ladysman), but I remember that rose in the coffee pot in my government subsidized apartment. I remember that quiet moment alone. 2011 was a good time.

Sardines (#180973) were not in my shopping list. Canned sardines are usually gross. But, I never tried sardines from Costco before, and they were on sale, so I gave it a try. To my pleasant surprise, they were enjoyable. They are skinless and boneless. I will buy again and keep them as long term storage (backup) snack.

Snapdragon’s Vietnamese Pho is relatively new at Costco. They are bad for you but also so tasty. I bought 2 boxes (18 bowls total). I will try not to eat them too often. They were also on sale. ($3 off each box).

All supplements were on sale, but I spent a lot of money on them nevertheless.

Paper Straws at Costco Food Court
Thank you for visiting.

Latest posts by John (see all)

I’ve heard about paper straws on news media but this was the first time seeing them in person – at Costco Food Court. As I was dressing my hot dog, I could hear people talking about the paper straws. They were basically saying “Oh, paper straws”

The straw was narrower than normal plastic straws that I am use to. I would prefer wider straws, but that’s an American gripe (one of the reasons why some people hate Americans). Paper straws are just fine. I enjoyed my hot dog.

Out of curiosity, after my hot dog lunch, I filled my soda cup with water and came back to work. I drank that water rest of the day using the same paper straw. The straw held up nicely. I think tip of the straw will break apart if you hold it in your mouth constantly for a few hours. Besides that, paper straws seem perfectly fine for normal people.

It was nice to see paper straws at Costco food court.

Update (January 14, 2020): After reading some of the comments, I paid close attention to the straws on my next few visits to Costco food court. And I can tell you without any hesitation that I absolutely enjoy using these paper straws at Costco. Again, maybe it’s because I grew up (& lived) poor all my life. Maybe I am just not sensitive to taste and smell. Whatever the reason may be, I am absolutely happy with these paper straws at Costco food court. But it is also important to hear from people who don’t like these straws. Because maybe I am the minority in this opinion poll.

Holiday season is approaching fast that I can feel it on my skin. We had a pretty warm day today, but as I hurried to Costco after work, it quickly turned chilly as the Sun started to go down already.

With my empty cart, I went straight to Christmas aisle. I stayed there for awhile and enjoyed this train village (Sold out late October). I liked the music and lights. And the train was going in and out… This thing was a dream. I couldn’t walk away from it. I thought about people living in those tiny houses. I wish I had this when I was a kid. But, aren’t we all kids? Anyway, Christmas is magic. Oh, how I cherish Costco’s Christmas aisle…

Soon, I was back on to Costco shopping. Coupons (instant savings) saved $27.50.

European Cookies (#181679 $8.99 after $3 off) have been my holiday ritual for last 10 years or so. Every holiday season, I buy a few cans of these cookies from Costco and put them in freezer. I enjoy them on weekend with morning coffee. My plan is to enjoy little bit of Christmas throughout the year. I bought 3 boxes of of these cookies last year. I am on the last box now.

Soy beans and pot stickers (#440175 $7.99 after $3 off) will last several months for me. It’s good to have variety of quick meals handy. Especially if you live alone, you have plenty room in your freezer, and keeping a freezer full will save energy.

I failed miserably on watermelon this time. The watermelon I bought today was barely enjoyable. It was about 7 out of scale of 10. I am beginning to wonder if I will ever have a good watermelon rest of my life. I would pay $100 for a really good watermelon. I suck so bad at picking watermelons. I spent a lot of time and money hunting for a super-fantastic watermelon.

I bought three bottles of Nature’s Bounty, Nair, Skin & Nails (#553486, $12.46 after $3.50 off). I’ve been taking Biotin supplements every other day, but my hair was getting thinner over the years. I shall take extra dose of these and see if my hair will grow thicker. Don’t get old, people.. don’t get old… 🙁

Coupon saved $17.00 – mostly on wiper blades.

Michelin wiper blades are super cheap at Costco, especially when there is instant rebate like right now. So, go and get your wiper blades at Costco. If you don’t need it now, just buy a pair and keep them in your trunk. You will thank me later. The sale ends October 27, 2019.

Three days later, at a garage sale, I bought 2 wiper blades for $2. This is a typical garage sale irony that happens sometimes.

There was a lot of watermelons at Costco. Using my prior experience, I looked at the bottom part of each watermelon and picked out one watermelon that I think had the best looking underbelly. I took it home and cut it open. It was enjoyable but was not super-fantastic. It was 8 1/2 out of scale of 10. I would like one really good watermelon before the season ends.

Box of Kirkland Signature Christmas chocolates is for the guys at mail annex (warehouse) at my work. I will give them the first Christmas gift of the year (in October). I do a lot of online shopping and get all my packages delivered to my work. I shall keep my mail-room guys happy.

I believe Occuvite works for me. As I get older, I started to see strange black spot. I see tiny black dust whenever I open my right eye. But, it goes away if I take Occuvite. I take it every other day or once every three days.

I cannot get enough of Vietnamese Pho instant noodles. It’s so good and different than what I’m used to. I know they are bad for me (high sodium, empty calories, early death, etc..), but they are so good. Also, each serving unit is smaller than most instant noodles, so I eat less sodium and less calories. I bought 2 boxes while they were still on sale.

Season is changing. I see more pumpkins than watermelons in stores now. This year, I only had one super-fantastic watermelon. I would really like to enjoy some good watermelons before the season ends. I walked in to Costco warehouse focused – and found less than 10 watermelons huddling at the bottom of a bin. I bent down in an awkward position for a few minutes looking for the best looking watermelon.

I cannot imagine female shoppers going for watermelons in this extreme bent-down position. I wouldn’t be surprised if someone files a law suit against putting watermelons in ground level like this. It’s not only physically challenging to a lot of people, but it prevents most female shoppers from getting watermelons. It puts shoppers in awkward position.

Anyway, I found one watermelon for me. It didn’t look very good, but it was the best of what was left. This reminded me of myself.. I may not be a super-fantastic guy, but I am as good as it could get in what’s left of single men at my age. So… get some. Haha!

I took the watermelon home and cut it open. It was juicy and crispy. It had an amazing texture, but it was not super sweet. Center part was pretty good, but outer meat was not super-fantastic. I rate this 8 1/2 out of 10 in yummy scale. It was still enjoyable.

I guess they quoted me.

It’s Christmas time! Christmas nativities were in stock at Costco! But… as I get older, holiday season is starting to feel little depressing. It feels like last Christmas was only a few months ago. And yet another year is coming to an end. Life is still fun and positive. But, now I see more life in my rear-view mirror than in front. It’s kind of bittersweet. Anyway, let’s enjoy while we are still here. Please stay healthy and share love with me.

SPAM was on sale – I understand a lot of people don’t like SPAM. But, to me, SPAM is crazy good times. We don’t know what kind of meat we’re eating, but who cares when they are so yum? I will marry anyone who smells like SPAM (mm… maybe not).

I have a friend who likes cheese, so I’ve been buying different cheese lately.

Focus Factors and Weider Prime are mystery products. I don’t know if they do anything for me. It’s just… I am scared to miss out on anything if I don’t take these. So, I take them time to time to see if I feel anything different.

And finally, I bought a watermelon. I’ve been obsessing over watermelons lately. Before I go any further, you have to understand how it is to be a single man living alone. I don’t pick up kids after school, I don’t plan family vacation, I don’t worry about my wife’s dental plan, etc… Compared to normal family men, I have a huge void. I need to find something to channel my energy, so I will not cry myself to sleep every night. For now, I am obsessing about watermelons. I would like to develop the art of finding good watermelons. So, back to Costco…. This time I bought a watermelon with dark yellow underbelly. I took it home and opened it. It was very red, very sweet, but mushy. This watermelon was too ripened. The next day, I went to a local market and bought another watermelon. That one was enjoyable, but it was not super-fantastic.

I often I have two cut opened watermelons in my refrigerator. I normally end up throwing away one of them. So far, I only have had one super-fantastic watermelon this year. This is frustrating.
